Another view of the Walnut House living room showing the stair, entry hall, and a glimpse into the white-and-wood kitchen beyond.

Walnut House

East Norwich, NY
Walnut House began as a 1920s colonial that had been expanded in fits and starts, leaving a compartmentalized plan and little sense of continuity. The new owners, a young family on Long Island’s North Shore, wanted a brighter home with spaces that flow easily while still supporting different ways of living together.

The renovation clears out the main level into a broad, open floor, then uses subtle level changes, casework, and lighting to give each area its own character within a single, connected volume. A restrained palette of white walls, warm walnut tones, and soft textures ties old and new together and brings a playful calm to everyday life.

Exposed steel columns are wrapped in leather to reduce their visual weight, and new stair stringers and treads, CNC-machined by the studio, turn circulation into a crafted object in the center of the house.

Upstairs, an expanded primary suite and a boutique-like bath offer a quiet retreat, rounding out a renovation that balances openness, clarity, and comfort for family life.
