Mill River Gardens Houses Resiliency

Oceanside, NY
Mill River Gardens was damaged by flooding during Superstorm Sandy, prompting a resiliency strategy that combines hard and soft measures to protect the Long Island community from future coastal events. The project strengthens the existing community center with passive flood gates, repairs and replaces bulkhead, and introduces a raised concrete plaza along the waterfront.

Alongside these structural upgrades, the design restores and reinforces the landscape with erosion-control stone, gabion seating, regrading, and native riparian planting to slow wave action and support the shoreline over time. Together, these elements create a more durable and welcoming edge between the buildings and the water.
