Kalamaki

Roslyn, NY
Kalamaki is a compact Mediterranean restaurant in Roslyn that transforms a former takeout deli into a warm, wood-lined room with a strong sense of direction and depth.

With less than 1,000 square feet for both kitchen and dining, the layout uses forced perspective—the length and skew of the service counters and wall bar—to visually stretch the space while guiding guests from street to ordering counter.

Walnut millwork wraps the perimeter as benches, counters, and tabletops, with portions carved away to create perches and niches that subtly hold the customer. Walnut inlays in the tiled floor trace angled “guidelines” that reinforce the perspective and organize seating. Cork surfaces and flashes of bright green acrylic introduce a playful note against the otherwise earthy palette, and the design team’s close involvement in fabricating the custom millwork and display cases ensured the details perform as precisely as they appear.
